She died at the age of 75

Penny Marshall, who was known for directing two of Tom Hanks' biggest movies 'Big' and 'A League Of Their Own' has passed away at 75.

Penny Marshall's publicist has said her passing was due to diabetes complications.

As well as being a well-known director, Marshall also dabbled in acting. She played one half of the lead roles in the sitcom 'Laverne & Shirley' opposite Cindy Williams, which aired from 1976 to 1983.

'Big' also saw Marshall become the first woman ever to see their movie gross over $100 million dollars at the box office.

Celebrities have been paying homage to the late director on Twitter, with Tom Hanks leading the tributes. The actor said, "Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx."


Billy Crystal tweeted, "Sad to hear of Penny Marshall’s passing. a great comedienne a terrific director and a dear friend."


Viola Davis thanked Marshall for all that she did for women, saying "Thank you for what you contributed to us girls."


Danny DeVito described Marshall as "a sweet woman" with "a heart of gold," yet "Tough as nails."


George Takei said Marshall "truly broke new ground as a director."

Mark Wahlberg tweeted his respects to Marshall, saying "Without her support and encouragement, I would not be where I am today."


Marshall was a huge fan of baseball, and Major league Baseball have also tweeted a tribute.


Ron Howard has said she "She made the transition from sitcom star to A List movie director with ease & had a major impact on both mediums."


Ava DuVernay thanked Marshall for "The hearts you warmed."

Comic Kathy Griffin tweeted about her friend, remarking that she "was a loyal friend, a pioneer for women in film."

'The Simpsons' animator David Silverman revealed that Marshall was the show's first ever guest star.

And finally Bette Midler, has said that the passing of Penny Marshall marks "The end of an era."
