The results from the last census are in, and we now have a number for the whole island for the first time.
The official population for the island of Ireland is 6.4 million, according to the results of the 2011 census, which have been combined for the first time to create a figure for both North and South.
The reason the two were chosen to be combined was because they were preformed so close together, on the 27th March 2011 in Northern Ireland and the 10th April 2011 in Ireland, and they give a good overall picture of the situation as a result.
When it comes to breaking down the stats, it seems that the Republic has the youngest population on average in the EU at 34-years-old, while Northern Ireland's average, at 37, was also below that of the EU overall of 41. The results show that 4.6 million live in the Republic, while Northern Ireland is home to 1.8 million, making the combined figure of 6.4 million.
