A new public park, which is expected to cost roughly €750,000, is set to be built in the Liberties area of Dublin city centre.
Weaver Park will be the first park in the area in over 100 years, and is expected to go under construction in 2016, and will be placed on a vacant site owned by Dublin City Council.
The site, which has been unused for seven years, is situated between Cork Street and Chamber Street, and was previously the Chamber Street flat complex before their demolition in 2008.
The council’s management had intended to sell the site, but local councillors blocked the move, demanding it be kept for community use due to the lack of green spaces in the area.
The centre of the park will be divided between a lawn for games, and one for sitting and reclining, which will be raised.
The park will include a terraced area which will serve as a “hangout space” for teens, as well as a skateboarding zone.
A range of play equipment will be housed in an enclosed area, all of which is suitable for children up to 10 years old, and also includes equipment for children with disabilities.Â
A picnic area, a calisthenics gym, an amphitheatre, and a number of planted areas are also proposed.
