Everyone loves movies, so it goes that everyone loves hearing people talk about movies too.
Given how much movies have shaped and influenced popular culture, it's no surprise that they make up a fairly hefty chunk of podcast output today.
As with all shows, however, each and every one of them is going out of their way to do something different to separate themselves out and you can find a podcast on just about any movie topic you like without much searching.
With that in mind, we've pulled together 7 sure-fire hits for movie fans.
We kick things off with...
7. 'The Best Bits'
Irish screenwriters Will Collins ('Wolfwalkers', 'Song of the Sea') and Kevin Lehane ('Grabbers') host their weekly podcast where they each pick out a specific scene or theme and then discuss them. As it's called The Best Bits, well, the clue is the name - it's the best bits of movies. If you're looking for bite-sized fun and good banter with two knowledgable screenwriters, this is one to add to your download list.
6. 'This Had Oscar Buzz'
Awards season might have come and gone, but there's always room for a little bit of sifting through the ones that almost reached the ceremony. 'This Had Oscar Buzz' delves into the movies that - as the title suggests - had Oscar buzz, but never failed to materialise into something other than an also-ran. Each episode unearths the movie at its time, how it's perceived now, and why it never latched on with Oscar voters. Smart and layered with dry humour, 'This Had Oscar Buzz' has everything except a gold statue on its mantelpiece.
5. 'Maltin on Movies'
Leonard Maltin is one of the old guard of US movie critics, being a contemporary of the likes of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, and is still going strong today at the age of 70. 'Maltin on Movies' sees Maltin and his daughter, Jessie, interview a new guest each week and discuss some of their work. The guests are pretty varied, to say the least. Angela Lansbury, special effects guru John Dykstra, Craig Ferguson, Peter Weller, and Judy Greer are all on recent episodes.
4. 'Soundtracking with Edith Bowman'
Music and movies go together like a horse and cart. Each episode of 'Soundtracking' sees Edith Bowman delve into the music that shaped actors, directors, and composers - both professionally and personally. Recent guests include the likes of Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell on 'Promising Young Woman', Kevin Macdonald and Oscar winner ChloƩ Zhao, Jamie Dornan, and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. Each episode is a mixed bag, but Bowman's hosting style and clear questioning gives it a sense of focus that other interview-based shows rarely have.
3. 'Kill James Bond!'
It goes without saying that some moments throughout James Bond's history have aged about as well as milk in the sun. For example, did you know there's a whole sequence in 'You Only Live Twice' where Bond gets put into yellowface makeup? Exactly. Well, 'Kill James Bond!' sets out to give the British secret agent the socialist / feminist appraisal that he quite frankly absolutely deserves. Bitingly funny, hosts Alice Caldwell-Kelly, Abi Thorn and Devon make their way through the filmography of Bond with every intention of ripping it to shreds.
2. 'The 250'
IMDb's Top 250 has been a part of movie history on the internet for actual decades now. The premise of the The 250 is simple - talk about every movie on that list, not to mention the Bottom 100 as well. Each episode focuses in on one movie with a guest along with hosts Darren Mooney and Andrew Quinn to talk about it. In fact, our own Deirdre Molumby was recently on for an episode about 'Mad Max: Fury Road'.
1. 'The Revisit'
Yes, we had to plug our own stuff. We couldn't let this opportunity go by without doing it. Season 1 and Season 2 of The Revisit are up on all podcast platforms. What is it, you ask? Well, Movies Editor of entertainment.ie Brian Lloyd interviews some well-known Irish names like Blindboy, Kojaque, Elaine Crowley, Chris Greene, and others, and talks to them about a movie of their choice. The second season features interviews with Dublin Lord Mayor Hazel Chu, Virgin Media News correspondent Richard Chambers, and Tommy Tiernan as well. They pick the movie, and together, they try and figure out why they picked it and why they love it - or hate it, in some cases.
