The Disney+ series has been axed
The dystopian series all about the total wipeout of those with a Y chromosone will not be back for a second season on FX.
'Y: The Last Man' has been cancelled by FX on Hulu. The dystopian/sci-fi series launched in the States via the network channel and streaming service in September, while here in Europe Disney+ was the distributor.
The series was based on the acclaimed DC Comics of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, and set in a post-apocalyptic world. An unknown cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome, and so it is up to those carrying the X chromosome to rebuild the world. Not everything is as easy as it may seem, plus there's a cisgender man and his pet monkey still alive which is causing confusion.
The series was seen as a step forward in terms of female power in the real world, painting a picture of what it would be like if women ruled the modern world. Unfortunately, it seems likely that we won't have the opportunity to see where the series was heading in later seasons.
'Y: The Last Man' has been cancelled ahead of it even finishing its first season run. Only the first six episodes of the 10-episode season are currently on Disney+ in Ireland. The series finale is due to air over in the States on November 1.
Eliza Clark, the series showrunner, tweeted the series cancellation news on Sunday evening, revealing that she is hoping the series will find a home on a new TV network. She wrote: "I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much left to tell. 'Y: The Last Man' is about gender, about how oppressive systems form identity... We don’t want it to end.
"FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad 'Y: The Last Man' is not going forward at FX on Hulu. But we know that someone else is going to be very lucky to have this team and this story.
"I never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y its next home."
DC Comics co-creator Brian K. Vaughan also expressed his sadness of the series being cancelled on his Instagram: "I love this show, and I’m very hopeful Y will find a new home, not just because it happens to employ more extraordinary women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community—both in front of and behind the camera—than any project I’ve ever been a part of, but because they’ve made something spectacular, the kind of thoughtful, contemporary, fearless evolution of the comic that [Pia Guerra] and I always wanted.
"These next three episodes are the very best of the season, so please keep watching, and if you want to see this journey continue as much as I do, we encourage you to let the world know:Â #YLivesOn"
Irish actor Barry Keoghan was originally cast as Yorick Brown in the series but later exited to be replaced by Ben Schnetzer. Keoghan went on to bag a role in 'The Green Knight' and Marvel's 'Eternals'.
