*Spoilers for the 'Ms. Marvel' finale below*
We'd recognise that music riff from anywhere (and so did the entire internet).
We all know it's about to happen, but the question is - when? During the season finale of the Disney+ series 'Ms. Marvel' this week, the mutant group called The X-Men were famously heard before the credits rolled.
The tease could be heard as Kamala's (Iman Vellani) friend Bruno (Matt Lintz) reveals to her that there's a possible mutation in her genes, and her powers are not only given to her from the bangle or her ClanDestine heritage. After he tells the young superhero this, a riff from the famous 'X-Men Animated Series' theme song can be heard. A coincidence? Definitely not.
In the comics, Kamala Khan is actually an Inhuman. However, given how much that particular TV series bombed in 2017, Kevin Feige and co. could be about to change tact with her origin story. Or, Kamala could still remain an Inhuman, and this X-Men tease could just be about other "groups" such as her being in existence out there.
Either way, it's certainly a huge step in the right direction for mutant kind. Those who have been keeping track of the MCU films will of course know that Professor X (Patrick Stewart) appeared in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' earlier this year, his appearance also warranting another use of the iconic theme song (which is actually credited as the 'X-Men ‘97' theme, the forthcoming animated sequel series).
It's also well-known that the eventual antagonist from that film, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), is the child of the X-Men's most famous adversary, Magneto. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (Evan Peters reprised his role in 'WandaVision' as a fake version of the character) have both made appearances in the 'X-Men' comics.
So, where does this X-Men revelation in 'Ms. Marvel' leave the mutants now? It's likely we won't hear much from them for another while, unfortunately. Marvel has its sights set on setting up another famous team first, The Fantastic Four, which will close out the planned Phase Four of the MCU.
As you would have seen should you have skipped forward until the end of the season finale, the next time we'll see Kamala will be with Brie Larson in 'The Marvels'. Teyonah Paris from 'WandaVision' will also be reprising her role as Monica Rambeau, with Samuel L. Jackson also rejoining as Nick Fury. The film has a release date of July, 2023.
