And 'Monster' is getting a third
The latest back-to-back Ryan Murphy offerings on Netflix will be back for more uncomfortable viewing.
Like them or not - enough people watched both of these series on Netflix to warrant second and even third seasons. Yes, 'The Watcher' will be back for a sequel series (about what, we have no idea), while the true-crime series with the subtitle of 'Monster' has been given the green light for second and third seasons on the streamer.
The Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan creations were both in the Top 10 Netflix TV shows during the months of September and October ('The Watcher' is still in there at the time of writing), and both were inspired by real-life happenings that took place in the US.
Released in September, 'Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' starred Evan Peters as the serial killer who targeted and brutally murdered a string of gay men between the years of 1978 and 1991. Although it is inspired by true events, the series proved to be a polarising release, with many viewers turning off before reaching the end of the 10 episodes. It has become, however, the second-most-popular English release on Netflix ever.
The planned second and third seasons of 'Monster' will not focus on Dahmer, but "other monstrous figures who have impacted society," according to Netflix. So, expect some other nasty serial killers to rear their heads on Netflix in the near future (yay?).
Season one of 'The Watcher', starring Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale and Jennifer Coolidge, was initially all about a family who were terrorised by mysterious notes in their mailbox from somebody calling themselves "The Watcher" before the series spiralled into all sorts of neighbourly chaos. It concluded on an open-ended note, mostly just making the house seem like an obsessive inanimate object for numerous characters.
It's unknown yet if the series will continue with the same characters for season two - or whether it will follow another family terrorised by bizarre and encroaching characters. Either way, Netflix are keen for the series to return.
What do you make of 'The Watcher' and 'Monster' making returns?
