The movie will be a direct follow-up to the original 1974 horror film
A new 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' movie is coming to Netflix, with two Irish stars among the cast members.
The original 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' hit theatres in 1974.
Made on a tiny budget, it was a major commercial success. Moreover, it's still considered to be one of the most influential horrors of all time.
The movie was directed by Tobe Hooper and followed a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals, most notably the iconic Leatherface.
There have been a number of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacres' sequels since, as well as a comic series and video game.
The last installment of the slasher franchise, titled 'Leatherface', failed to make an impression on audiences and critics when it hit cinemas in 2017.
This latest take on the genre is a direct sequel to the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. Akin to the 2018 horror 'Halloween', it will disregard the events of other films in the franchise.
Legendary Pictures produced the movie, which will debut globally on Netflix.
The streaming service describes it as "a new chapter in the iconic horror franchise that is set in the present day and returns to the roots of Tobe Hooper’s horror classic."
'Eighth Grade' star Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Jacob Latimore ('Detriot') and Moe Dunford are among the cast.
Nell Hudson (Outlander'), Alice Krige and Irish actress Olwen Fouéré also star.
David Blue Garcia is directing with Chris Thomas Devlin on screenplay duties.
Originally Irish directors Ryan and Andy Tohill (who worked with Dunford on 'The Dig') were set to helm. They departed the project due to creative differences.
Dunford told IFTN: "I’m delighted at the news that 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' has been picked up for global distribution on Netflix, hopefully that will give it the widest possible audience.
"I really enjoyed being in Bulgaria filming this new take on a classic, and I got to work with some great people – Elsie Fisher, Jacob Latimore, & our own brilliant Olwen Fouéré."
There's no release date for the Netflix movie just yet.
