Vecna is definitely one of the scarier TV villains
Fans of both shows may see some similarity between 'Stranger Things' season four's villain Vecna and the Night King from 'Game of Thrones'.
It won't be much of a surprise then that the prosthetic makeup was headed by Barrie Gower and his team, who has worked on both shows.
"With season four, they were after a new, big iconic villain," Gower said in a (SPOILER-heavy) interview with Variety. "They decided that they wanted their own version of the Night King, an iconic figure, and they thought 'Well, why don't we just contact the guys who made the Night King?'"
Vecna is the humanoid villain in the newest season of 'Stranger Things' and one thing is for sure, he is absolutely terrifying. The creature, who resembles a walking corpse also took inspiration from Freddie Kreuger, another iconic villain.
The idea for this season was to create a more lifelike and real antagonist, so designers focused mostly on practical make-up, rather than the CGI Mindflayer of seasons past.
Once the moulds were made, it apparently took over six hours to apply everything to the actor. This included up to 25 separate pieces glued to the body.
"We've been running our company for about 10 years now and we've done some quite extensive makeup, but I think that Vecna is definitely the most extensive sized prosthetic makeup we've ever done before," Gower said. "It's the same sort of process as the Night King but much bigger in scale."
It's hard to top the Night King for a purely terrifying character, but Vecna comes awfully close to matching him on looks alone. The question is, who would win in a fight?
Stranger Things' season 4 part 1 is now available to watch on Netflix.
