Welcome to the spooky season
'Tis awful chilly out so there's only one thing for it - get scared silly while wrapped up under the duvets.
Whether you're in the mood for a gentle scare, have a laugh with your horror, or to have the absolute sh*t scared out of you, there's a pumpkin-load of spooky releases to watch this Halloween.
Netflix
'Nightbooks' | Out Now
Krysten Ritter is a big ol' witch in this family horror movie. Based on the book of the same name, she's locked two children in her apartment and refuses to let them go. Imagine 'Hansel & Gretel', but with a modern twist and you're on the right track.
'Midnight Mass' | Out Now
The series comes from ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and ‘Bly Manor’ creator Mike Flanagan, who has already stated that this is his favourite story that he's made. A slow-burn thriller, we meet the residents of a remote island who begin to experiences "miracles" happening at the same time as a new clergyman appears. Keep watching 'til the very end.
'There's Someone Inside Your House' | October 6
There's a new teen slasher in town. From the producers of 'Stranger Things' and 'The Conjuring' comes a new heart-racer that certainly looks like it has been influenced by '90s films such as 'Scream' and 'Jeepers Creepers'.
'YOU' Season Three | October 15
Less of the spooky and more of the psychopathic, it's finally nearly the return of everyone's favourite stalker - woo! Joe is back for a third season, and this time he and Love welcome their new addition to their unhinged and utterly terrifying family, Henry. Will suburbia mellow these psychos out? We doubt it.
'Night Teeth' | October 20
What would you do if it was your last night on earth? Benny is a limo drier whose entire world is turned upside down after picking up two mysterious girls who just so happen to be vampires. Hurled into their cryptic underworld, he's on a mission to save his city from dripping in blood.
'Locke & Key' Season Two| October 22
A world of magic and horror awaits as the popular Netflix series returns for round two. With danger lurking closer than they know, Tyler, Kinsey and Bode unlock more family secrets as they dig deeper into the power and mystery of the keys.
Disney+
'American Horror Stories' | Out Now
A spin-off from the main 'AHS' series, we're given seven self-contained episodes which are aiming to present to us a selection of horror-inducing standalone stories. This will tide you over nicely until 'Double Feature' arrives later in October.
'LEGO Star Wars: Terrifying Tales' | October 1
We'll take all of the 'LEGO Star Wars' we can get, and this year they've released a special Halloween-themed adventure. The spooky tale will continue after the events of 'The Rise of Skywalker', as we follow Poe and BB-8 who run into Graballa the Hutt, the new owner of Darth Vader’s castle.
'Muppets Haunted Mansion' | October 8
In our eyes, The Muppets can do no wrong when it comes to a themed movie special. 'Muppets Haunted Mansion' will see all of our favourites return for one of the newest spooky releases on Disney+, and they're bringing with them an all-star guest cast too.
'Just Beyond' | October 13
If R.L. Stine's horror works are familiar to you, you might get a kick out of this latest series. Inspired by his weird and wonderful writings, this eight-episode anthology series introduces us to a supernatural world that is bursting full of witches, aliens, ghosts and parallel universes.
'American Horror Story: Double Feature' | October 20
Finally, the tenth series is here! After what's felt like the longest wait in history, the newest 'AHS' series has arrived, with pretty much all of the cast returning for a two-part series. Plot details are few and far between (but aliens and sirens are expected to be involved), so expect the weirdness level to be ramped up to 100.
Amazon Prime
'Welcome to the Blumhouse' 2021 | October 1 & 8
The second year of this horror anthology event sees four spooky movie releases arrive before Halloween. On October 1, 'Bingo Hell' and 'Black As Night' will be unleashed, while on October 8, 'Madres' and 'The Manor' arrive. This year's theme is "institutional horrors and phobias", which sounds terrifying.
'I Know What You Did Last Summer' | October 15
We may be living in the golden age of the reboot, but it's still somewhat exciting to see this fresh take on a classic horror franchise. First a novel, which was turned into a trilogy of '90s and '00s films, this TV series is about a group of teenagers who find themselves bound together by a dark secret and stalked by a brutal killer.
NOW & Sky
'Willy's Wonderland' | Streaming This October
It's Nicolas Cage in a horror movie - do you really need a reason why you should watch it? When his car breaks down, a quiet loner agrees to clean an abandoned family fun centre in exchange for repairs. He soon finds himself waging war against possessed animatronic mascots while trapped inside Willy's Wonderland. We told you you didn't need one.
'Voyagers' | October 8
While this might not be an all-out horror, we're getting whiffs of uncomfortable thriller off this one. A very strong cast Colin Farrell, Lily-Rose Depp, Tye Sheridan, Fionn Whitehead and Isaac Hempstead-Wright journey off into space - sure, what could go wrong?
'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It' | October 29
Finally, Sky Cinema and NOW have gotten their hands on the latest of spooky releases just in time for Halloween. The concluding chapter of 'The Conjuring' franchise sees the demonologist husband and wife take on their most frightening case yet.
