OLLAMH A PHÁISTÍ?!

Some day, somebody's going to have make an Oscar-winning documentary about the fact that an entire generation of Irish speakers learned our native language with a lot of help from 'Spongebob Squarepants'.

As we all know, TG4 generally tends to be ahead of the curve when it comes to programming - screening the likes of 'The Wire' and 'Fargo' long before they became major hits. And so it goes with 'Spongebob Squarepants', translating the animated series into Irish and, in the process, gifting an entire generation of Irish speakers with the knowledge to sing the opening song in their mother tongue.

Netflix have announced that the recently-released 'Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge On The Run' has been translated into Irish with the help of TG4 and Macalla. Not only that, 'Spongebob an ScannĂĄn: Rith, SpĂșinse, Rith' sees King Poseidon voiced by none other than DĂĄithĂ Ó SĂ©, replacing Matt Berry in the original.

The best part of all this, however, is that you happen to only have cĂșpla focal, the movie can be watched with English subtitles and Irish audio or the other way around. Maith thĂș!

And now, here's the original theme song as Gaelige.
