Should have just called it 'Gepetto'
Disney is ploughing ahead with their live-action remakes, and the latest one sees a wooden toy be brought to life by Cynthia Erivo.
We've got our first 'Pinocchio' trailer and it's, well, a trailer? It's mostly just words on a screen with snippets of scenes from the film, but it's a trailer nonetheless.
Tom Hanks stars as the woodcarver Gepetto, who wishes upon a star to make his new creation come to life (and who later appears out at sea, giving us strong 'Cast Away' vibes). This is followed by Cynthia Erivo popping in as the Blue Fairy, granting Gepetto his wish, and other moments in the trailer include flashes of Luke Evans as The Coachman and Giuseppe Battiston as Señor Stromboli.
None of the voice cast is heard, but their characters feature - this includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key as "Honest" John the Fox and Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, a new character. Finally, Pinocchio (voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), who the film is all about, only features very briefly at the very end.
'Pinocchio' comes from Academy Award winner Robert Zemeckis, who is once again teaming up with Hanks, having worked with him previously on 'Forrest Gump', 'The Polar Express', 'Cast Away' and Apple TV+'s 'Finch'.
'Pinocchio' sets sail exclusively on Disney+ from September 8, which also happens to be 2022's Disney+ Day. The celebration will lead directly into D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in California, and the streaming service will host special experiences and premiere new content for fans and subscribers. Last year's event revealed plans for 'Hocus Pocus 2', 'Disenchanted', 'X-Men '97' and many more surprises.
Here's the 'Pinocchio' teaser trailer.
It's important to note that Disney+'s 'Pinocchio' will release the same year as Netflix's upcoming animated take. Guillermo del Toro is heading up this creation, which will feature the voices of Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman and Cate Blanchett.
