Happy International Day of Happiness!
In the wake of all the madness, you may not realise it's International Day of Happiness!
We're determined to make it a day to smile about with these Netflix recommendations.
So curl up on the couch, forget your woes, and with this mix of classics and modern upbeat movies, we guarantee you'll find yourself smiling and laughing in no time.
When Harry Met Sally
The romantic comedy that dominates all romantic comedies is on Netflix now. By the time those crazy kids figure out they're enamoured with one another you'll be grinning and even crying with joy.
Shrek
A grumpy ogre, a sidekick donkey and a princess head on a road trip. All the feel-good stuff and plenty of hilarious jabs at Disney ensue. Also the older you get, the more you realise, there are so many adult jokes in this.
Dumplin'
This Netflix original stars Jennifer Aniston and is super sweet. The plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen signs up for her mom's Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant. Initially, it's in protest. Then she starts to take it seriously.
The Terminal
Being forced into self isolation (in an airport, in this case) may ring a little too true right now. But that ending is so full of hope and generosity, it's worth seeing 'The Terminal' through.
Eddie the Eagle
Starring Taron Edgerton from 'Rocketman' and Hugh Jackman more foul-mouthed than you've ever seen him, this true story about an Olympic ski jumper is really uplifting (see what we did there?).
Holiday in the Wild
You couldn't get cheesier than 'Holiday in the Wild', about a divorced mom who ends up volunteering at an elephant reserve in Africa. Still, we'll admit, Kristin Davis and Rob Lowe charmed us. And those elephants are adorable.
Legally Blonde
A sorority queen who applies to Harvard Law to win back her ex-boyfriend discovers she is "so much better than that" along the way. Definitely feel good stuff.
Matilda
A beloved 90s family classic, 'Matilda' stars Mara Wilson as the titular girl genius who defies her cruel parents and principal to forge her own path. A fabulous Roald Dahl adaptation.
Yes Man
Jim Carrey learns the power of "yes" by answering in the affirmative to everything for a year. Aside from 'Sonic the Hedgehog', which he plays a damn good villain in, this is Carrey's best movie in recent years.
Groundhog Day
There are some more sombre moments in 'Groundhog Day', yes, but again, that ending makes it all worthwhile. For many this movie is a favourite, and quite ironically, it gets revisited over and over again.
Knocked Up
Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen's characters have a one night stand after which the former becomes pregnant. The couple try to figure out their relationship over the nine months before their child arrives. 'Knocked Up' comes from director-writer Judd Apatow in his prime.
Dirty Dancing
Would it be overkill to say 'You'll Have the Time of Your Life' watching this movie? Probably. But we're saying it anyway.
Happy Feet
While on the topic of dancing, this CGI-animated feature about tap-dancing, singing penguins is also a joy. And randomly, it's from the director of the 'Mad Max' movies, George Miller.
This Is The End
From kid friendly to definitely not for little ones, 'This is the End' sees Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson (among other celebs) play themselves. Jay and Seth attend James' housewarming. But then the apocalypse happens. So chaos and hilarity ensues.
Clueless
Eugh, as if (you couldn't love this movie)! It's one of the most revisited movies to come out of the 90s as it makes for laugh-out-loud entertainment and a clever social satire. It follows a high school student named Cher, who causes a lot of trouble, for herself and others, when she decides to act as matchmaker.
