Ready for the strangest crossover ever?
Tyler Perry's character Madea is a strange one to write about here in Ireland, because it never quite "made it" over here. Now, thanks to a Netflix special, one of our country's most recognisable faces will appear in Perry's latest release.
A man dressed in drag will cross paths with another man dressed in drag; yep, it's the Madea x Mrs. Brown crossover from your nightmares that's come to life.
As mentioned at the top of the article, Tyler Perry's Madea doesn't resonate with an Irish audience, nor has it had the opportunity to. With the boisterous grandmother being the lead character in multiple movies, plays, television series and even an animated film and a book, pretty much none of these creations have managed to be released in Ireland.
The character first debuted in his 2000 play 'I Can Do Bad All by Myself', which spawned a huge franchise over in the US. However, as you can see via Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' reviews of the films have been pretty harsh to say the least; 'Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween' is the most recent release, which sits on a stinker of a 4% average critics score. So, not the most well-received, but that strong audience score is what keeps Perry returning to the character.
This new Netflix effort, 'A Madea Homecoming', will be the first time that a Tyler Perry movie will hit a streaming service, and marks the character's return (from what many presumed was the character's demise).
And so, one of the US's most famous cross-dressers will be teaming up with one of Ireland's, as Brendan O'Carroll is set to make a guest appearance as Mrs. Brown. Here's a shot of them both together from the upcoming release.
The official synopsis of the Madea and Mrs. Brown Netflix special is as follows:
Madea's back — hallelujer! Tyler Perry returns with everyone's favourite character in Tyler Perry's 'A Madea Homecoming', the newest film in the Madea franchise set to debut on Netflix. Writer-director-producer Perry stars in the film that centers around Madea's great-grandson's college graduation, though the celebratory moment hits a halt as hidden secrets and family drama threaten to destroy the happy homecoming. The film features all-stars of the Madea franchise, including Tamela J. Mann (Cora), David Mann (Mr. Brown), Cassi Davis Patton(Aunt Bam) as well as a guest appearance from iconic Irish actor Brendan O'Carroll, who matches Madea's comedic prowess as Agnes Brown.
'A Madea Homecoming' arrives on Netflix on February 25.
