Although The Cloverfield Paradox was an utter mess of a film that should have never seen the light of day, Netflix's predilection for taking on sci-fi films hasn't diminished in the slightest.
The streaming giant is due to release Annihilation, which was originally supposed to be released by Paramount. The brainy sci-fi film is the second directorial effort from Ex Machina's Alex Garland and boasts a top-flight cast that includes Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac and Jennifer Jason-Leigh. Not only that, Netflix also picked up Duncan Jones' long-gestating, Blade Runner-esque thriller Mute with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd.
On top of all this, Variety reports that Netflix has scooped up another sci-film and is planning to release it themselves. Extinction, which stars Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan and boasts a script from Arrival writer Eric Heisserer and direction by indie darling Ben Young, has been purchased by Netflix for an undisclosed sum.
The story follows Pena's character who has a recurring dream of losing his family which eventually becomes a reality - when an alien force decides to invade Earth and wipe out humanity as we know it. Like Annihilation and The Cloverfield Paradox, Extinction was pulled from Universal's slate and sold to Netflix.
The film will be released on February 23rd, with a trailer expected to turn up in the coming days and weeks.
