Even though it had a sequel, a spinoff, and an unsuccessful reboot with Jason Momoa, Netflix is now joining the battle to get people excited about 'Conan The Barbarian' in an age of 'Game of Thrones', 'Star Wars', and countless other fantasy and sci-fi properties.
Deadline is reporting that Netflix now has exclusivity to adapt any and all Conan-related stories for either live-action television, or through animated series. While most people are probably familiar with the '80s iteration with Arnold Schwarzenegger's loincloth, Conan the Barbarian has been around since 1932.
Written initially in the anthology fantasy series 'Weird Tales', the character has been featured in novels, comics, short stories, videogames and everything else since then. The original author, Robert E. Howard, is considered the father of the sword-and-sorcery subgenre of fantasy, and is one of the best-selling fantasy authors of all time.
So far, no showrunner has been attached, nor has any castings been announced for the role of Conan or any other characters. On top of that, the character of Conan has repeatedly been proven to be a tricky character to try and adapt, seeing as how it's influenced so many writers and properties from it.
In fact, this isn't the first time that a TV series based on Howard's character has been attempted. Only a couple of years ago, Amazon tried to get a TV series going, but nothing ever came of it.
Either way, it'll take a lot to match something like this.
