In order to save subscribers their money
The good people over at Netflix have decided to cancel the inactive accounts of people who haven't been using the streaming service for quite some time.
If you have a Netflix account that you haven't used in over a year then you might want to pay attention. In a statement released from the on demand service, subscribers who haven't watched a single title within the past year will soon be asked whether they wish to keep paying for the service.
Written by product innovation team member Eddy Wu, he writes that "the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using."
In the very near future, subscribers who haven't been using the service in the past year will either receive an email asking whether they wish to continue paying the monthly bill, or a message will pop up within the app if you log in. If users don't confirm their wish to keep using Netflix, the company will simply cancel your subscription.
But if you're worried about your previously-watched titles disappearing, should you wish to subscribe once again in the future, Eddy explains: "If anyone changes their mind later, it’s really easy to restart Netflix.
"We’ve always thought it should be easy to sign up and to cancel. So, as always, anyone who cancels their account and then rejoins within 10 months will still have their favourites, profiles, viewing preferences and account details just as they left them."
These "few hundred thousand" inactive accounts only represent less than half of one per cent of Netflix subscribers, and they are only doing so in the hopes it'll save "people some hard-earned cash."
In recent months, Netflix has become one of the easiest outlets for people to enjoy their extra free time at home. With titles such as 'Tiger King', 'Too Hot to Handle', and 'Extraction' becoming their most successful productions ever, the future is looking bright for what's to become of Netflix in the future.
