Mike Flanagan's new series filmed with no interruptions
'Midnight Mass' is expected to arrive on Netflix at some point in the new year.
2020 was the year that no-one expected. Pretty much every single TV show and movie filmed across the entire planet ended u taking some form of hiatus this year. While many have picked up once again (while trying to adhere to distance protocols as much as possible - see Tom Cruise), one such production which managed to film without any bumps along the way is Mike Flanagan's 'Midnight Mass'.
Filming over 83 days, the new series from the creator of Netflix's 'The Haunting of...' anthology gives the lowdown on how his production managed to avoid any and all bad luck. Flanagan wrote and directed every episode of the limited series.
An original idea from the director and writer, the Netflix limited series is expected to arrive in late 2021. Based on an original idea by Flanagan, the story takes place within an isolated community, following the arrival of a young priest. Many strange and mysterious phenomenon occurs after his arrival.
Tweeting his success story on Twitter to his followers, Flanagan said the series had officially wrapped. However, filming should have begun in March, but days away from beginning to film, everything had to be put on hold.
He said: "We were mere days away from shooting when the production was shut down in March 2020 because of the pandemic. We left our sets standing, dropped everything and frantically got our cast and crew to their homes as the lockdown began.
"Our COVID safety protocols were thorough, scientific, and strictly enforced. Our precautions paid off - we did not miss a single day of production, and unlike a lot of other shows, we did not shut down once. Not one time. 83 shooting days, without interruption.
"This series has been a dream project of mine for many, many years. It is the most personal story I've ever told. I've been reluctant to direct a whole season again after HILL HOUSE, but I'm so glad I did in this case. I am so lucky to have worked with this cast and crew."
Here's the series of tweets.
We began prepping this series in December, 2019. We were mere days away from shooting when the production was shut down in March 2020 because of the pandemic. We left our sets standing, dropped everything and frantically got our cast and crew to their homes as the lockdown began.

And now, today, we did. On time, on target. The plan we outlined last Spring, which seemed almost impossible in its complexity and uncertainty, actually WORKED. It's as though we threw a dart in June, and somehow - against all odds - watched it hit the bullseye in December.
