Come on, who doesn't love Jean Smart?
The multiple award-winning comedy series hits our screens later this week.
'Hacks' season one will arrive on Prime Video this Friday - here's what you need to know about one of the best comedies of last year.
The HBO Max series stars Jean Smart as an ageing comedian, Deborah Vance, who is getting the feeling that she's approaching her sell-by date. One of the original female comics, she's been doing the Las Vegas stand-up circuit for decades.
However, she's not the main star of the show. The series closely follows down-and-out comedy writer Ava, played by Hannah Einbinder, who is struggling to stay afloat after a rather offensive tweet goes viral and upends her career. Her manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) suggests that Ava could write some material for Deborah, and the pair begin a tumultuous working relationship as comedian and writer.
The series also has a stacked supporting cast. Kaitlin Olson ('It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia') is Deborah's crazed daughter, DJ; comic and internet sensation Megan Stalter also stars in a supporting role as Jimmy's terrible intern/assistant; Carl Clemons-Hopkins ('Candyman') plays Marcus, Deborah's assistant; and Christopher McDonald ('Thelma & Louise') as the CEO of the casino Deborah sells out each week.
If the cast list wasn't enough to sway you to tune in, then the series' 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score will likely get you to take a look. The series also won Jean Smart an Emmy Award, SAG and Golden Globe for Leading Actress, and a number of other wins across a number of other awards shows. A second season is expected later this year.
Jean Smart has been enjoying a recent resurgence in the TV spotlight the past year, having also supported the cast in Kate Winslet's 'Mare Of Easttown' as the detective's mother, Helen.
We couldn't find an official trailer from HBO Max, but we did discover this hilarious interview session Meg Stalter did with the cast of the series. It's a nice buffer for what to expect in 'Hacks'.
All 10 episodes of 'Hacks' will be available on Prime Video this Friday, April 1.
