Goldenballs will be getting the Netflix treatment

One of the most famous sporting figures of all time will be the subject of a multi-part Netflix documentary.

Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham is parterning with Netflix for the documentary series, which Beckham says will feature "unseen archive, untold stories as well as interviews with people who have been part of my journey."

An announcement from Netflix read "the definitive multi-part series will go beyond the shine of stardom to explore Beckham’s humble working-class beginnings in East London, and the drive and determination that led him to become one of the most recognisable and scrutinised athletes of all time."

Oscar-winning documentary maker Fisher Stevens will direct the documentary, with Stevens scooping an Oscar in 2010 for his work on dolphin documentary 'The Cove', with Oscar-winning producer John Battsek also involved in the project

Beckham became one of the biggest names of the 90s and 2000s following his exploits on and off the pitch, with Beckham bursting onto the scene in 1996 with an audacious goal against Wimbledon.

Beckham was an integral part of Manchester United's dominant era in the 1990s, featuring in a star-studded squad alongside the likes of Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes.

The English midfielder left United in 2003 under controversial circumstances, with Beckham teaming up with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos at Real Madrid.

Beckham's spell in Spain was frustrating, but ended his tenure in La Liga by securing the title for Real Madrid in the 2006/2007 season under Fabio Capello.

"Goldenballs" made the move to LA Galaxy in 2007, helping put the MLS on the map as one of the major global football leagues, and even teamed up with Irish icon Robbie Keane in his final two seasons at the club, forming a close friendship.

Beckham served as England captain in 2 World Cups, and was widely seen as the face of England's so-called "golden generation" of players that failed to win a major international trophy.

The free-kick expert is just as known for his off-field exploits, with his marriage to Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham cementing them as perhaps the world's most famous couple.

The couple married at Dublin's Lurrelstown Castle in the summer of 1999, and "Posh and Becks" became one of the most prominent celebrity brands of the modern era in the process.

Since retirement in 2013 after a 6-month spell at PSG, Beckham has kept himself busy in the world of business, with his football team, Inter Miami, currently playing in the MLS.

No word yet on a release date, but that should give the football fan in your life plenty of time to clear space out of their calender to binge this series ala 'The Last Dance'.
