Which is your favourite?
We've said it before and we'll say it again - Netflix really knows their stuff when it comes to the young audience. That's just why there are so many great YA movies on Netflix.
Whether they're '80s classics or modern gems you might have missed, there are loads to choose from.
Having covered genres like romance, comedy, action and horror movies on Netflix in the past, we thought it only fair to look at teen pics too.
Come back to us next week as we'll be covering the best YA shows on Netflix then. After all, they've loads of series for teens too.
Until then, here are the best YA movies on Netflix to get stuck into right away.
The Edge of Seventeen
Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) has always been awkward and finds it difficult to relate to other young people. She has one friend in Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), and is enraged when she starts to date her brother Darian (Blake Jenner), who sh's always been in the shadow of. Steinfeld demonstrates her star status is on the rise with this movie. Woody Harrelson meanwhile makes for a great screen partner to bounce off as cynical teacher Mr Bruner.
Clueless
Alicia Silverstone plays Cher, a spoilt, wealthy and popular but well-meaning high schooler from Beverly Hills who's something of a busybody. She has no interest in romance but takes it upon herself to set up those around her. Eventually Cher's true feelings start catching up to her. Many of us have revisited 'Clueless' over and over. And with good reason, because it's awesome.
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging
We've picked quite a number of cute teen rom coms within our selection of Netflix movies for teens and young adults. And they don't get much cuter than 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging'. Georgia Groome (who ended up having a baby with 'Harry Potter's Rupert Grint, would you believe) plays a 14 year old who is experiencing lots of things like kissing, love, and thongs, all for the first time. Aaron Taylor-Johnson co-stars in one of his first film roles.
Easy A
Teen movie comedy classics span the likes of 'She's All That', '10 Things I ate About You', 'Bring It On', 'American Pie', 'Never Been Kissed', and 'The Breakfast Club' among many others. 'Easy A' is a much more recent example of the genre but thanks to a sharp, funny script and a class lead performance from Emma Stone, it now ranks among the classics. Stone plays seventeen-year-old Olive Penderghast, whose lie about losing her virginity ends up spiralling out of control.
Five Feet Apart
The life of cystic fibrosis patient Stella Grant (Haley Lu Richardson) utterly changes when she meets a fellow CF patient named Will Newman (Cole Sprouse). Will is a joker and a rule breaker, and tries to encourage Stella to take more risks. Eventually, they fall in love, but a relationship seems impossible given CF patients have to stay at least 6 feet away from one another to prevent cross-infection. Expect a heavy 'The Fault in Our Stars' feel and bring the tissues.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them… at the same time? Lara Jean Song Covey's love life goes from imaginary to out of control when the love letters for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all-- are mysteriously mailed out. Lana Condor ('Alita: Battle Angel', 'X-Men: Apocalypse') and Noah Centineo ('Sierra Burgess Is A Loser', 'The Fosters') star. There's also a sequel on Netflix now.
Sixteen Candles
This classic from the unofficial king of teen pics - John Hughes - follows the 'sweet' sixteenth birthday of a girl named Samantha (Molly Ringwald). Everything that could go wrong does, but a last minute change of luck ends up working in her favour. Admittedly some aspects of this movie have aged very badly (like the sequence with the drunk girlfriend in the car). Those issues aside, it remains a must-see movie with a fantastic lead performance from Ringwald.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Based on Stephen Chbosky’s novel (who also wrote and directed the film), 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' depicts the experiences of junior high school student Charlie (Logan Lerman) and his friendship with two senior students named Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller). The three leads give dazzling performances, and the story is engrossing.
Dumplin'
'Dumlin'' is a Netflix original and feel-good story about family, friendship, appreciating those around you, and loving yourself. Daughter of a former beauty queen (the impeccable Jennifer Aniston), Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald) goes out to prove a point by entering her mom's Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant. She learns there's more to these contests than meets the eye and meets some extraordinary locals in her Texan hometown.
The Breakfast Club
Another John Hughes classic, 'The Breakfast Club' is, by far, the ultimate in 80's teen drama. Five teenage archetypes - a sports jock, a rich kid, a nerd, a Goth and a burnout - are held in detention on Saturday morning on March 24th, 1984 and form a bond that goes on to define a generation. As with other Hughes movies, parts of it have aged poorly. But don't you forget about it...
The Young Offenders
A lot of people seem to forget that hit Irish comedy series 'The Young Offenders' (which is currently airing its third season) was originally a movie. Released in cinemas in 2016, with the same cast (Alex Murphy, Chris Walley and Hilary Rose), it sees two teenage boys named Jack and Conor cycle to the coast of Cork. They hope to find a bale of cocaine worth 7 million euro there. P.J. Gallagher, who plays the lads' principal in the series, plays a drug dealer also after the cocaine, in the film.
