Smith sat down with David Letterman before doling out the slap that reverberated around the world. He talks about taking ayahuasca 14 times and witnessing the downfall of his career via the drug.
If Awards season coincides with your pop culture hibernation period, you may not know that this year at the Oscars, Will Smith found himself in a kerfuffle with Chris Rock, after the comedian joked about Smith's wife's alopecia.
In the soft giggles that followed the lame joke, Smith broke the fourth wall, yelling "Keep my wife's name out your f*cking mouth". The next thing we knew, Smith was marching onstage towards Rock and, as many people have put it, slapped the sh*t out of him.
Smith was banned from the Oscars and it sparked a huge debate online about who was in the right and who was in the wrong. It was practically all media outlets were talking about for weeks.
But the mad thing is, Will Smith saw this "prophecy" unfold while tripping on a hallucinogenic drug, ayahuasca. For people who've never heard of the drug, traditionally, ayahuasca was a psychoactive drug used ceremoniously by the spiritual people of the Amazon basin.
Nowadays, its has been used for social and experimental purposes, including retreats. Ayahuasca lasts for several hours and causes people to have spiritual encounters but it also causes side effects like vomiting and diarrhea. It's known to aid in recovery of some mental health conditions, but also worsen others.
It's known to be pretty strong, so when Smith disclosed that he had done it 14 times, we were a little taken aback. He talks about seeing all his earthly possessions and values "flying away" and "my career and my whole life is getting destroyed".
More disturbingly, he cites "I hear Willow screaming, 'Daddy, help me, daddy, how come you won't help me?' And I'm like, 'I don't see you, baby".
Frightening as that sounds, the transcendental experience caused Smith to develop an unbreakable trust within himself and whatever hand he's dealt in life, "I can handle any person I lose, I can handle anything that goes wrong in my life, I can handle anything in my marriage, I can handle anything that this life has to offer".
