The sci-fi series was hugely popular
With sci-fi series like 'Dark' going down extremely well on Netflix in recent years, many expected new German show '1899' to follow in its footsteps.
However, it has been revealed that the streaming titan has cancelled the series after just one season, despite the fact that it ends on a major cliffhanger.
The series, which debuted on Netflix in November, follows the story of a group of European migrants bound for a new life in New York in 1899, aboard a ship called the Kerberos. However, things take a turn when they discover a similar migrant ship abandoned and adrift on the open sea.
It was roundly acclaimed, with the New York Times declaring it 'one of the best things on Netflix right now' last month. Horror author Stephen King was one of the fans who declared that he "loved" the series.
Showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese - who were also behind the aforementioned 'Dark' - took to social media to confirm that there would be no season two, despite previously revealing that there was a storyline in progress for two further seasons.
"With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed," they wrote. "We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.
"That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget."
Actor Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, who played Krester in the series, also said that he was "devastated" by the decision.
The news has caused an outcry, with fans setting up petitions and demanding that Netflix reverse its decision.
