The legendary Patti Smith turned 70 the other day (December 30th), so it was only right that she had a cake and a sing-song to mark the special occasion.
Unlike most people, however, Smith had a very special and well-known friend on hand to provide both.
During her Chicago gig on the night of her birthday - where she was performing her seminal album 'Horses' in its entirety - Smith was surprised by her friend, REM frontman Michael Stipe, who presented her with a cake and led a singalong of the festive tune.
