U2 have warned fans against purchasing fake tickets for gigs which have not yet been announced.

Although the band are said to be releasing their twelfth studio album before the end of 2008, they have not confirmed any live dates to accompany it.

A statement on their website said: "There are no tour dates for the band at the moment, so please don't buy tickets for U2 shows you see advertised."

In more interesting U2-related news, an online petition has been created, urging Bono to retire.

The people behind the petition claim that the frontman is 'self-righteous' and have promised to donate any money they raise from the campaign to charity - but only if Bono will retire from the limelight, and "stop leading misguided counter-productive philanthropy efforts".

"The grassroots leaders of the global fight against AIDS didn't ask for Bono to be their frontman. It's time for Bono to step down", they say.

"We will give money to Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. But we will only pay if we meet our objective", the petition claims.
