Our new series brings you on a trip down memory lane through the Irish singles charts
If there's one thing we love, it's a dander down memory lane – especially where music is involved.
Granted, the accompanying realisation of 'That song is X years old?! Oh sh*t, I'm old' isn't always pleasant - but there's a lot to be said for a comforting wallow in nostalgia.
With that in mind, we're bringing you a new 'Throwback Thursday' series where we look at the best-selling singles in Ireland from a random year – the good, the bad and the plain awful.
We'll be swinging headlong into boyband territory, veering left for a smidge of indie-rock and going downhill for the 'men-with-acoustic guitar' era, but it's all part of the fun.
In our first edition, we'll step back in time to 2001 to look at the Top 10-selling singles in Ireland from that year.
This was a year that was clearly dominated by (mostly) international pop – Wheatus's 'Teenage Dirtbag' being the one semi-indie/rock outlier.
Looking back, apart from the one or two tunes that are still certified bangers (i.e. Kylie, Lady Marmalade and yes, S Club 7 – we will die on this hill), it's a pretty pitiful Top 10. The kind of playlist you could see yourself dancing to after a few shandies at a wedding, for sure – but as a top 10 to stand over? Well, the less said about DJ Otzi's 'Hey Baby' and Shaggy's double-whammy of 'It Wasn't Me' and 'Angel' at #3 and #2, the better. Oh, Ireland. What were you thinking? Did Shaggy have some dirt on us collectively as a nation?
The only explanation we have for this Top 10 - apart from the global proliferation of boy and girl bands - is that Ireland was clearly suffering from a Celtic Tiger-fuelled sense of exorbitance when it came to our music-buying habits. We honestly can't think of any other reason why people would spend money on the gag-inducing bile that is Atomic Kitten's 'Whole Again'.
As for Westlife at number one with a Billy Joel cover? Their iron grip on the charts had yet to become unstuck at that point. More's the pity.
