Our new series brings you on a trip down memory lane through the Irish singles charts
If there's one thing we love, it's a dander down memory lane – especially where music is involved.
Granted, the accompanying realisation of 'That song is X years old?! Oh sh*t, I'm old' isn't always pleasant - but there's a lot to be said for a comforting wallow in nostalgia.
With that in mind, we're bringing you a new 'Throwback Thursday' series where we look at the best-selling singles in Ireland from a random year – the good, the bad and the plain awful.
We'll be swinging headlong into boyband territory, veering left for a smidge of indie-rock and going downhill for the 'men-with-acoustic guitar' era, but it's all part of the fun.
In recent weeks, we've explored the pop-heavy 2001 and 2006, when Ireland's music-buying public was in the vice-like grip of pop mania.
This week, we'll rewind 17 years and take a look at the 10 best-selling Irish singles of 2004.
First impressions: wow, that's a pretty solid number one! 'Toxic' is 100% Britney Spears' best song (and we'll fight anyone who says otherwise) and still stands up. How is it 17 years old, though?! In fact, Britney makes two entries into the top 10 with melancholic pop ballad 'Everytime' at number six.
Meanwhile, Kelis's 'Milkshake' – another great pop/r'n'b song that has stood the test of time – was the 4th best-selling single of the year, which is good news. The downside is that it was beaten in sales by Tim O'Riordan and Natural Gas's 'The Langer', a song that we have absolutely no memory whatsoever of. We're guessing it was a 'Jumbo Breakfast Roll'-style novelty tune? Anyone?
Oh, and there's Eamon at number two – the rapper with the most 'dad' name in music. Was the one-hit-wonder so popular in Ireland purely because of his name?
Elsewhere, there are solid-if-uninspiring entries with Anastacia, Eric Prydz and Usher – all songs that you'd expect to hear on 'Reeling in the Years', but hardly classics of any description.
Charity supergroup Band-Aid were revived in 2004 as 'Band Aid 20', which included such luminaries as Daniel Bedingfield, Dido and Justin Hawkins of The Darkness. Doubtful you'd remember anything specific about this tune, TBH.
And finally... remember 'Dragostea Din Tei'? Of course you do. It's also known as 'Maya Hi', the only international pop hit by Moldovan pop band O-Zone which also inspired the 'Numa Numa' dance meme. It was phenomenally successful on a global scale, which is no mean feat considering how terrible it is. Once you'd played it, it'll be stuck in your head all day. Sorry about that. On three, now: 'Maya hiiiiiii, maya haaaaa....'
