Our new series brings you on a trip down memory lane through the Irish singles charts
If there's one thing we love, it's a dander down memory lane – especially where music is involved.
Granted, the accompanying realisation of 'That song is X years old?! Oh sh*t, I'm old' isn't always pleasant - but there's a lot to be said for a comforting wallow in nostalgia.
With that in mind, we're bringing you a new ''Throwback' series where we look at the best-selling singles in Ireland from a random year – the good, the bad and the plain awful.
We'll be swinging headlong into boyband territory, veering left for a smidge of indie-rock and going downhill for the 'men-with-acoustic guitar' era, but it's all part of the fun.
Previously, we've examined the top-selling singles from 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2011 and let's just say that there were a lot of crimes against music involved.
Today, it's time to look at 2009.
What we've learned thus far from this series is that Ireland – much like most other countries, in fairness – gravitates en masse towards mainstream pop music (with the odd novelty tune thrown in, but let's not go there today). What's interesting, however, is how few of the Top 10 in 2009 are still regularly releasing music today. Joe McWho?
One outlier from 2009 is Lady Gaga. We may as well just call it The Year of Gaga, in fact, considering how three of her songs – 'Bad Romance', 'Poker Face' and 'Just Dance' – dominated the Top 10.
Alexandra Burke (who has since moved into a career in musicals) also had a good year, following her triumph in The X Factor in late 2008. The 2009 winner of the talent show, Joe McElderry, meanwhile, scored the best-selling single in Ireland that year with his cover of Miley Cyrus's 'The Climb', while The Black Eyed Peas hit big with 'I Gotta Feeling' and 'Meet Me Halfway'.
With six different acts in the Top 10, pretty much every single song a pop tune, it makes for a pretty uninspiring Top 10, all told.
