The rock band won by a landslide
One of Finland's most successful rock bands is headed to Turin in the hopes of taking home the coveted title for a second time.
Just in case you thought otherwise, Finland wants a win this year. The Rasmus will be representing the Nordic country at this year's 'Eurovision Song Contest' in Italy, cementing the country's love for all things rock and roll.
The rock band has been together for nearly 30 years, and remains one of Finland's most recognisable and internationally successful groups. They took part in Finland's televised competition 'Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu' this past weekend, winning a landslide 27.4% of the vote out of seven potential winners.
Vocalist Lauri Ylönen said of The Rasmus representing Finland at 'Eurovision' this year: "We did it! We are so happy. It was a super tough competition, all the other songs were very good.
"We were preparing so hard for this for six months. We are really taken and honoured and we will be working like pigs to represent Finland in the best way in Turin."
According to the band, their winning track 'Jezebel' is a song for strong, independent women, who blaze their own trail.
Should The Rasmus succeed for Finland this May, it will be the country's second win at the global event. Lordi famously tore up the script of the 'Eurovision' in 2006 with their winning track 'Hard Rock Hallelujah.
Due to the devastating Russian invasion of Ukraine this past week, the European Broadcasting Union has decided that Russia will no longer compete in the competition. It followed a quick turnaround from the board, who 24 hours earlier had said the country could participate. Many European countries, including Finland, said they would not send take part in the singing contest if Russia was present.
Ireland's 'Eurovision' hopeful this year is a stark contrast to The Rasmus. Flying the Irish flag for us will be Brooke Scullion (who will be going by her first name), who will perform her pop banger 'That's Rich'.
Last year's winners, Måneskin, have forged an incredibly successful career for themselves since taking part in the competition. Earlier this year they appeared on 'Saturday Night Live' while Will Forte hosted.
This year's 'Eurovision Song Contest' will be taking place during the week of May 9, with the grand finale being held on Saturday, May 14.
