The Mercury Prize winner has become almost impossible to predict over the last few years, with the judging panel often opting for an unexpected name on the shortlist rather than the favourite.

In fact it's pretty rare that the favourite comes out on top, although most people expected that the fact that David Bowie is no longer with us (and that he left a cracking album behind) might influence the judges, even subconsciously. Radiohead, who released their 'comeback' album 'A Moon Shaped Pool' earlier this year, were also deemed to be strong contenders.

However, a clearly stunned grime artist Skepta was named the winner at the ceremony in London for his album 'Konnichiwa', which was judged to be the best British and Irish album of the past year.
