The reclusive singer was best known for 'Goodbye Horses' and her work with director Jonathan Demme.
Diane Luckey, best known by her stage name Q Lazzarus, has passed away. She was 61.
The singer was best known for her song, 'Goodbye Horses', which featured on the soundtrack to two Jonathan Demme movies - 'Married to the Mob', starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and more prominently, 'Silence of the Lambs'. The song is featured in a key scene involving Buffalo Bill, the skin-hunting serial killer of the movie. Lazzarus also featured in Demme's Oscar-winning drama, 'Philadelphia', where she performed the Talking Heads song, 'Heaven'. The song itself was covered by numerous artists, including MGMT, The Airbone Toxic Event, and Jon Hopkins.
However, Q Lazzarus broke up in 1996 and since then, the singer essentially went into civilian life, where she was working as a bus driver in her native New Jersey for many years. An avid fan of the singer eventually tracked her down, as a lengthy investigation into the mystery surrounding both Luckey and the disappearance of Q Lazzarus was posted by Dazed in 2021.
Indeed, Q Lazzarus' passing only came to attention when it was picked up from a little-read paper and had stated that she had no interest in singing or fame any more. Intriguingly, Lazzarus / Luckey was apparently working on a music documentary about her career and life with Mexican director Eva Aridjis. It's understood the documentary will still be released in 2023.
In the meantime, here's the song.
