1991 - Metallica launched their self-titled fifth album, commonly known as the 'Black' album, at New York's Madison Square Garden. Among the attendees were Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic.
1985 - Madonna placed at number one in the UK charts for the first time with Into The Groove, which was taken from the movie Desperately Seeking Susan in which Madge starred alongside Rosanna Arquette. It went on to sell over 850,000 copies.
1971 - Paul McCartney announced his first post-Beatles project Wings. He was to be joined by former Moody Blues member Denny Laine and, er, his wife Linda.
1968 - The Doors hit number one in the US with their now classic tune Hello, I Love You. It would remain here for two weeks and was one of the band's 8 top 40 hits between 1967 and 1971.
1963 - The Beatles played their last ever show at the famous Cavern Club venue in Liverpool, receiving £300 for their troubles. Still, better than their first payday at the venue - £5.
