Muse and Kasabian were this year's big winners at the Shockwaves NME Awards, which took place last night at London's O2 Academy Brixton with performances from Kasabian, Lily Allen, Marina and the Diamonds, Hole, The Maccabees and The Big Pink.

Kasabian were delighted to take home the gongs for Best Album and Best Album Artwork for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, while Muse bagged the top award for Best British Band and Best Website, while their frontman Matt Belamy also took home the prize for Hottest Man.

Following their massive sold out Humbug tour, it was nice to see Arctic Monkeys beat both of those top winners to take the award for Best Live Band, also coming in ahead of Radiohead and Them Crooked Vultures. Best Live Event, however, went to Blur and their comeback performance at London's Hyde Park, not only one of the biggest gigs of 2009, but one that will be remembered for years to come.

Meanwhile, Bombay Bicycle Club beat competition from much more hyped outfits La Roux, The XX and Mumford & Sons to take home the award for Best New Band, while Lily Allen won the Giving It Back Fan Award for her Twitter ticket treasure hunt. Who says internet gimmicks are a waste of time?

Surprisingly enough, Oasis failed to bag any of the nine awards the band and their two leading men were nominated for – not even Worst Band, which was justly awarded to the Jonas Brothers, as was Worst Album for 'Lines Vines Tying Times'. And paradoxically yet appropriately, Lady Gaga picked up awards for both Best Dressed and Worst Dressed. Well, she had no competition, really.
