The VMAs usually throws up a few surprises and this year was no exception, with Nicki Minaj calling out Miley Cyrus in a possibly probably staged set-up and Kanye West announcing his intention to run for president in 2020.
As if all that excitement wasn't enough, Miley Cyrus - who was hosting the awards - dropped the news of a surprise album release.
It had been previously announced that Cyrus has been working on an album with The Flaming Lips over the last year or so, but last night, as she closed the ceremony, she announced that she was releasing the follow-up to 2013's 'Bangerz' as a free download.
The 23-song 'Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz' album is available on Soundcloud now, and was reportedly kick-started when her beloved dog Floyd died in 2014 and she was visited by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. Coyne features on several of the album's songs - including 'Dooo It!', which he helped Cyrus out with at the VMAs last night - and co-produced much of the album.
"“He’s everything in the world — you can’t even define us,” Cyrus told The New York Times. “I am 100 percent in love with Wayne, and Wayne is in love with me, but it’s nothing sexual in any way. That would be the grossest.”
