A poll undertaken by listeners of BBC Radio and Jazz FM to find the greatest jazz artist of all time turned up an unsurprising result when it was revealed that jazz trumpeter, composer and band leader Miles Davis came out on top.
Davis, who died in 1991 aged 65, is regularly cited as an all-time great of any musical genre. He beat off competition from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane and Billie Holiday in the poll.
Presenter Helen Mayhew said: "The epitome of cool and an iconic character, Miles was at the forefront of key developments in the sound of jazz through each decade of his long career."
A biopic about Davis called 'Miles Ahead' was released in October and stars actor Don Cheadle in the title role. Cheadle also directed the film, which is set in the late 1970s.
The top 10 in the BBC poll were:
1. Miles Davis
2. Louis Armstrong
3. Duke Ellington
4. John Coltrane
5. Ella Fitzgerald
6. Charlie Parker
7. Billie Holiday
8. Thelonious Monk
9. Bill Evans
10. Oscar Peterson
