MIA is apparently accepting donations after apparently grossly offending the NFL (and, presumably, every single one of several million people who watched on TV) by briefly extending her middle performance during her appearance at the Superbowl halftime show in 2012.
The NFL have stepped up their legal action and have demanded that the singer pay them a total of $16.6m in restitution, claiming that this is the fee for the "alleged value of public exposure she received by appearing for an approximately two minute segment during Madonna's performance" and that the figure is based upon the figure that "advertisers would have paid for ads during this time", as per reports in NME.
The NFL is apparently quite sensitive about issues like this after Janet Jackson's nipple apparently caused a breakdown in US society after Justin Timberlake exposed it to the air on national television.
Meanwhile, MIA's legal team is doing its best to rubbish the NFL's claims, saying that they "lack any basis in law, fact or logic" and that "continued pursuit of this proceeding is transparently an exercise by the NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge the NFL."
In further evidence that they're not taking any sh*t, they also included in their response a detailed breakdown of several incidents which have taken place at the Superbowl which they deemed more offensive than that, such as a player using racially offensive language during a match.
In slightly less legal terms, MIA has herself accused the NFL of a "massive display of corporate dick-shaking" and also inquired as to if Madonna would be interested in footing the bill.
What say ye, will we get a whiparound going?
