The awards show took place in Los Angeles without a live audience

It goes without saying that it's a very strange time in American politics - and that has filtered into popular culture, too.

With just weeks to go until the presidential election, more and more famous names are joining a chorus urging Americans to use their voice and vote at the polls.

One of them is Lizzo, whose used her acceptance speech (and dress) at last night's Billboard Music Awards to address the topic.

Picking up the award for 'Top Song Sales' in a black and white dress emblazoned with the word 'vote', she said 'I've been thinking a lot about suppression, and the voices that refused to be suppressed. And I wonder would I be standing here right now if it wasn't for the big black women who refused to have their voices be suppressed?

"When people try to suppress something, it's normally because that thing holds power. They're afraid of your power.... so whether it's through music, protest or your right to vote - use your power, use your voice and refuse to be suppressed."
