Disney are bringing the 'cinematic stage performance' to cinemas around the world

It's undoubtedly become one of the most famous and in-demand stage musicals of all time since debuting on Broadway in 2015.

But if you haven't seen Hamilton (and have no plans to travel to London or New York anytime soon to do so), there's good news.

Lin-Manuel Miranda made the big announcement yesterday that the show has been filmed and is heading into cinemas around the world.

'Hamilton' tells the story of one of America's founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, with hip-hop, soul and other contemporary music genres in the mix.

Rather than a film adaptation of the show, however, it will combine “the best elements of live theater and film”. The 160-minute feature was shot over three performances in 2016 and features the original Broadway cast - which means seeing Miranda in the lead role. He vacated the role in July 2016, but reprised it for three special performances in Puerto Rico in January 2019.

A deal worth a reported $75 million was struck with Disney for the project; once it's completed its cinema run, it will then be available on Disney+.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said: "Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art.

"All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

The downside? You'll still have to wait until October 15th, 2021 to see it.

That hasn't deterred fans, though - considering Miranda's announcement has been 'liked' over 330,000 times in less than 24 hours.

That said, not everyone was happy with the news...
