The Darkness frontman took to Twitter to set the record straight
The Taylor Hawkins tribute gig that took place on Sunday at Wembley Stadium was, by all accounts, an uplifting, feelgood celebration of the late Foo Fighters drummer's life.
Some of the biggest stars of the music world showed up, including Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde, Liam Gallagher, Brian May, Travis Barker, Mark Ronson and more.
However, there were a few eyebrows raised when Justin Hawkins of The Darkness came on stage while AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson was singing the band's iconic song 'Back in Black', with Metallica's Lars Ulrich on drums.
Some onlookers assumed that Hawkins had 'gatecrashed' the stage and 'grabbed' the mic off Johnson mid-song, but he took to Twitter to assure fans that this was not the case.
He said that Johnson - who has suffered from vocal trouble in recent years - had asked him to sing the song's second verse backstage 10 minutes before he went on, and he "initially refused, I've never sung it before and I didn't want it to seem like I was gatecrashing".
However, after being encouraged by Dave Grohl - who told him "if Brian tells you to do something, you fucking do it" - Hawkins went on. "The stage manager scrambled to prepare a microphone for me, but I didn't know which one I was supposed to take," he explained, "and I ended up having to steal Brian's, which looked a bit awkward."
