#FreeBritney just got another step closer to happening
On Tuesday of this week, Britney Spears' father has filed a petition to end his 13-year hold over his daughter's finances.
Jamie Spears wishes to end his conservatorship over Britney. The 69-year-old has asked judge Brenda Penny to terminate his part in controlling his daughter's finances and health care.
In the document submitted to the court by his attorney Vivian Thoreen, Spears says that he "wants what is best for his daughter" and she "should get the chance" to control her own life.
Judge Penny will have to approve this latest development in the conservatorship.
The document reads: "Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy.
"She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.
"As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance."
Three weeks ago, Jamie Spears agreed to step down as conservator over his daughter's estate, but only if adequate negotiations could be reached. Jamie Spears' attorney submitted a document at the time which read: "It is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests.
"Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests. So even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator."
This new development in the Jamie Spears conservatorship case comes just three weeks before the case's next hearing on September 29, which will discuss his removal as conservator. Britney Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has kept up intense pressure on her father since joining the case in July, previously blasting his "shameful and reprehensible attacks" on his daughter.
Last June, Britney Spears spoke openly on how much of a toll her 13-year conservatorship has taken on the 39-year-old. She admitted to the court: "I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive. I don’t feel like I can live a full life."
We will learn more about the outcome of the case on September 29.
