Foo Fighters have announced that they will release a new album - their eighth - later this year, along with an eight-part HBO series documenting the record's inception. Dave Grohl, fresh from directing a documentary about the recording studio Sound City in 2013, will also continue his flirtation with film by helming the HBO project.

The episodes will document the band as the travel to a different American city to write and record the album, with Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington DC and New York all confirmed at this point as destinations. Describing the project, Grohl said it would be "a love letter to the history of American music."

Local musicians and personalities will contribute to each of the tracks, with all the lyrics being written at the last possible moment - sometimes just minutes before the track was laid down. Guests on the record (and show) will include world famous Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy, with lots of other surprises to be confirmed closer to the show's air date.

Michael Lombardo, President of HBO programming, said: "Dave's heartfelt passion for this project is contagious and his talent as a musician and filmmaker is undeniable. We are excited to go on this journey with him and the Foo Fighters for this insider's look at how regional music inspired them to create their own new music."

Grohl, speaking to BBC Radio jock Zane Lowe, said of the project recently: "I know what it sounds like and I honest think the entire concept is really going to take people by surprise and it sounds nuts."

Well this is a little post-Summer treat to look forward to, eh?
