It's been a decent year when it comes to remixes, and Brian Lloyd has picked out five of the best that 2013 has to offer...
Phoenix – 'Trying To Be Cool (Breakbot Remix)'
French art-rock quartet Phoenix have always benefited from having DJs take a run at their work. Breakbot, whose made a name for taking good songs and making them great, is the perfect choice to turn a decent enough album track into a disco-influenced track with a perfect, driving beat. This should have been the song of the summer.
Hurricane – 'MS MR (CHVRCHES Remix)'
CHVRCHES have truly impressed this year with their live performances and all-round abilities. Taking a downbeat song and turning it into an 80's Italo banger is truly inspired and worthy of inclusion. We can't wait to see what CHVRCHES have in store for 2014.
Disclosure – 'You & Me (Flume Remix)'
2013 has been Disclosure's year, reaching mainstream success and producing an absolute stomper of a song with Nile Rodgers and Sam Smith. Again, had it been released in the summer, Together would have been the song of the summer. Alas, it wasn't to be. A number of Disclosure's tracks have been remixed, but Flume's take on You & Me stands as the best of them.
Flight Facilities – 'Stand Still (Wave Racer Remix)'
Flight Facilities played a fantastic set at this year's Forbidden Fruit, however this didn't make into the set. At least we think it didn't. This remix by Wave Racer takes certain elements, jettisons the rest and comes up with an easy, danceable track that will go over with just about everyone. It's light, breezy and was only released a few weeks ago. It will be a huge hit in 2014, we think.
David Bowie – 'Love Is Lost (James Murphy Remix)'
If anyone was going to take a swing at David Bowie and his latest album, it's going to be LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. Having produced Pulp's comeback blaster, After You, the DFA kingpin took a run at an under-appreciated track from the album. Murphy's penchant for long intros hasn't gone away, however, and will infuriate those who didn't like it in LCD Soundsystem. However, when the song lifts off, you can hear that clever little sample of Bowie's hit, Ashes To Ashes, along with Murphy's signature drum beat. A great remix of a great song.
