Calexico drummer John Convertino told Entertainment.ie last week that there's a possibility that he may record a concept album based on legendary athlete Jim Thorpe.
Thorpe, who died in 1953 in Oklahoma (where Convertino grew up), and was regarded as one of the finest athletes of his day, excelling in Olympic pentathlons and decathlons, as well as American Football, basketball and baseball.
"I was actually kicking around this idea when the Olympics started, I was thinking about this athlete that I've always admired. I was born in New York, but grew up mostly in Oklahoma, and there was this amazing athlete who was half-Cherokee Indian, half-white, called Jim Thorpe. He won four or five gold medals, maybe more, I'm not sure. He was just a very fascinating character, and I've always wanted to do a concept album based on him," Convertino said.
He also revealed he and fellow Calexico bandmate Joey Burns - who are about to release their new album 'Carried to Dust' (and who play Dublin's Tripod on September 10th) - are composing the score to the forthcoming movie 'Love Ranch'.
