The song was originally on Richardson's album 'Smiling Like an Idiot'
It’s fair to say that Ellie Goulding is one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now - but she still clearly knows a good tune when she hears it.
It’s been a year since Sorcha Richardson released her excellent second album ‘Smiling Like an Idiot’ and the Dublin indie pop art has marked its anniversary in a pretty notable way.
Richardson revealed that Goulding had reached out to her on social media to say that she was a fan of her song ‘Shark Eyes’ and asking permission to cover it.
Goulding tweeted her cover of the song and also revealed that she and the Dalkey native had been writing new material together.
“Fell in love with this @SorchaRichardsn song Shark Eyes so asked if I could sing a cover of it,” she said. “Thankfully she said yes and we wrote together too.”
Richardson, meanwhile, added “Still can't quite get my head around the fact that last summer I was on a train to West Kerry when I checked my phone to see a DM from Ellie Goulding saying she had heard Shark Eyes, loved the song and wanted to do a cover of it.
I pretty much kept it a secret out of fear that if I told anyone it wouldn't come true but low and behold Ellie's word is gold and her cover of Shark Eyes is out now on YouTube.”
She added how she was a big fan of Goulding’s album ‘Lights’ when it came out, and would walk around New York - where she lived at the time - listening to it while gathering the courage to perform at open mic nights, calling it a “pretty magic full circle moment.”
