David Bowie has had a rare species of Malaysian spider named after him. The Heteropoda davidbowie is characterised by its large size and bright yellow hair, and has become severely endangered.

The spider was discovered by a German spider expert named Peter Jager. While the choice of name reflects Bowie's preoccupation with spiders presented in the1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (artwork above), Jager also revealed that he hopes it will help draw attention to the creature and prevent the destruction of its natural habitats.
