One of the fascinating things about pop music is how just one song can completely transform an artist's career. Such was the case for Cher two years ago, when her single Believe became the best selling ever by a female singer and put her firmly back on the showbusiness map. Evidently eager to repeat the same winning formula, the celebrity diva's new album plunders the same disco territory, with predictably diminishing returns. On just about every track Cher's voice is seriously distorted by vocoder, which is fine in small doses but eventually ends up making her sound rather cold and inhuman. It doesn't really fit in with the nature of the songs, which feature plenty of overblown dramatics and are firmly pitched at the camp end of her fanbase. Still, a couple should be strong enough to give her the hits she needs to keep one of the longest-running pop shows firmly on the road.
