Britney Spears will open this year's MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

Spears's performance at the same ceremony last year, which was billed as a 'comeback', was catastrophic and saw her come under fire for badly lip-synching.

However, it's not clear whether she'll open the ceremony with a performance, as some reports have suggested that she will simply appear with a short speech.

Spears is nominated for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for her song 'Piece of Me'.

"MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMA - I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated," she said.
