The hearing will take place in June
The #FreeBritney movement has inched ever-closer to a positive outcome for the pop star. Although there is still a long battle ahead.
Britney Spears has been granted her request to address the court in an upcoming hearing. Judge Brenda Penny set a status hearing for June 23.
It is not clear yet whether Britney will appear in court in person or via video link in front of the Los Angeles Superior Court. The subject matter of her appearance is also unknown.
Up until now, the 39-year-old singer has only spoken about her father's conservatorship through her lawyer Samuel Ingham, who previously said that she is "afraid" of her father. She also promised not to perform live until he no longer controls her finances.
The conservatorship allows Jamie Spears to control his daughter's estate, which has been in action for the past 12 years. He stepped down from the role in 2019 due to poor health when Jodi Montgomery temporarily replaced him.
The HBO documentary 'Framing Britney Spears' from earlier this year catapulted the ongoing legal battle onto our screens, following years of fans tracking the singer's ongoing conservatorship.
Sky News reports that Lynne Spears, Britney's mother, has objected to fees claimed by Jamie's legal team. The sum of around $890,000 (€737,000) has been billed to the Spears' estate over four months. Jamie, who divorced Lynne in 2002, said his ex-wife was "not acting in the best interests" of their daughter.
Just last week, pop icon Cher stood up for Britney Spears. She said: "I think her father should move over and let her have her life. I believe she’s been paying long enough. It’s not like everybody on the strip in Las Vegas hasn’t been talking about this for a long time."
