The Icelandic musician's 10th album is out later this month
A new Bjork album is always a treat; the Icelandic musician is one of the few musicians who remains completely unpredictable from project to project.
With news of her forthcoming album 'Fossora' emerging in recent weeks, the now-56-year-old has revealed both the amazing artwork and more details about the follow-up to 2017's 'Utopia'.
She released a statement that read:
"each album always starts with a feeling
that i try to shape into sound
this time around
the feeling was landing
( after my last album utopia which was all island in the clouds element air and no bass )
on the earth and digging my feet into the ground"
She added that the pandemic had also had an impact, saying "it was also woven into how i experienced the "now"
this time around 7 billion of us did it together
nesting in our homes quarantining
being long enough in one place that we shot down roots"
The album title, she said, is "a word i made up. it is the feminine of fossore ( digger, delver, ditcher )
so in short it means "she who digs" ( into the ground )
so sonically it is about bass , heavy bottom-end ,
we have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub."
Lead single 'Atopos' is expected to be released soon following the teaser below, while the album is out on September 30th.
The album is also believed to have been inspired by the death of her mother in 2018, as well as her return to Iceland during the pandemic. It features collaborations with her two children Sindri and Isadora, as well as American musician serpentwithfeet, Indonesian dance duo Gabber Modus Operandi, and a bass clarinet sextet.
Bjork also launches a new podcast 'Bjork: Sonic Symbolism' today, which sees her in conversations with various collaborators on her previous albums.
