As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis is heading to jail after pleading guilty to a murder-for-hire plot, after coming clean in court yesterday by admitting he hired a man to kill his wife. Lambesis, whose wife was not physically harmed, is now staring down a $10,000 fine and a maximum of nine years in prison.
The singer of the metalcore band, who formed in 2000, was arrested last May after attempting to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife Meggan, who had dissolved their marriage the previous September. It is alleged that Lambesis gave an undercover detective posing as a hitman $1,000 and details on how to gain access to Meggan's property.
The prosecutor in the case said that the singer agreed to pay a sum of €20,000 when his wife was killed. When asked by the hitman, dubbed 'Red', if he wanted his wife dead he replied: "Yes, that's exactly what I want."
The singer's defense against these charges? Lambesis' lawyer maintains that his client's thought processes were "devastatingly affected" by a cocktail of drugs that he was regularly taking, including a heavy dosage of steroids.
It was also revealed that Lambesis was conducting several affairs, had told his personal trainer of his intentions to kill his wife and had been, as the divorce papers put it, been spending money irresponsibly. For example, €20k to have your ex-wife murdered…
Sentencing will be May 2nd.
As I Lay Dying were nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008 for their song 'Nothing Left'.
